ABOUT UCOL

The UCOL Institute of Commercial Photography Auckland (UICPA) was established recently and is a part of the Universal College of Learning, an award-winning, government-funded Institute of Technology and Polytechnic founded in 1902. As such, UICPA has strong roots with UCOL’s success in visual imaging programmes.

UICPA is proud to offer the Diploma in Photographic Imaging, a programme which has set a high benchmark in visual imaging across New Zealand. Focusing on contemporary digitally-based photographic imaging, graduates apply a range of conceptual, creative and technical skills in their employment or self-employment. Included are basic business skills, a strong portfolio focus, and the opportunity to explore other related areas of visual imaging industry such as design, visual journalism and video.

The Diploma in Photographic Imaging builds on the long term success of photographic training at UCOL which sets the benchmark for courses in visual imaging across New Zealand.

The programme focuses on contemporary digitally based photographic imaging, and graduates will be able to apply a range of conceptual, creative and technical skills for employment or self-employment. The programme also provides basic business skills, a strong portfolio focus and the opportunity to explore other related areas of the visual imaging industry.

New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography/Iris Awards 2013

The New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP) is the only qualifying body for professional photographers in New Zealand, and currently has over 350 members across NZ covering the disciplines of Wedding, Portrait and Commercial Photography. The Iris Awards are held each year, and are an important platform for showcasing the outstanding talent of NZ professional photographers.

Canon EYEcon is a competition created especially for New Zealand’s emerging photographers and filmmakers. It’s the ultimate opportunity to showcase your talent, gain valuable experience and pitch yourself against the best in your field. This competition has always been open to tertiary students and assistant photographers within New Zealand.

APPA/AIPP Awards

APPA is the acronym for the Australian Professional Photography Awards, which are held annually and usually coincide with the staging of an annual photo imaging exhibition organised by the Imaging and Digital Entertainment Association (IDEA). The current major sponsor of APPA is Canon.

Professional photographers from Australia and New Zealand compete for a number of industry awards by submitting four images, which are judged by a panel of their peers. The Canon AIPP APPA attracts hundreds of entries and the premier award is the title of “The Canon AIPP Australian Professional Photographer of the Year”. Each year award winning images are published in an Awards Book.
